What is Reclaimed Water?

What, Why & How?

2018 Water Forward Plan

In November 2018, the Austin City Council approved Water Forward, a comprehensive 100-year integrated water resource plan designed to ensure a sustainable and resilient water future for Austin. The plan addresses challenges such as population growth, drought, and climate change by implementing a diverse array of water management strategies.

It included the framework for future mandatory reclaimed water projects on what the city would later define as a "Large Development Project".

Mandatory Reclaimed Water?

Yes, reclaimed water projects are now mandatory for "Large Development Projects" in Austin, Texas.

Austin Water is launching the GoPurple program to promote sustainable water use by expanding the adoption of reclaimed water in Austin and surrounding areas. Approved by the Austin City Council on March 7, 2024, this initiative supports water conservation, addresses the effects of ongoing drought conditions, and aligns with the Water Forward 100-Year Plan. Key actions include the installation of Onsite Water Reuse Systems (OWRS) and connections to the city's reclaimed water system for non-potable uses such as irrigation, toilet flushing, and cooling towers.

Onsite Water Reuse Systems

Effective April 1, 2024, Onsite Water Reuse Systems (OWRS) are required for new commercial, multi-family, and mixed use development projects with 250,000 square feet of gross floor area or more; or commercial, multi-family, and mixed use development projects with new or replaced evaporative cooling towers.
